Outside the city you should definitely see Petrohof and Tsarskoye  Selo.

The Golden Ring

The Golden Ring represents several ancient towns around Moscow that have considerable historic, architectural and spiritual importance. The most famous ones are Sergiyev Posad, Sofrin, Rostov Veliky, Yaroslav, Kostroma, Suzdal, Vladimir, and Uglich. There you can see a great collection of old Russian churches, monasteries, fortresses and palaces. They are easily accessible by bus and train from the capital.

Lake Baikal

Lenin’s Mausoleum is the final resting place of the great leader and idilogist Vladimir Lenin. It is located on the Red Square- Moscow’s main square. The mausoleum is situated next to the Kremlin wall.

Soon after Lenin’s death in 1924 a decision was made to build a temporary tomb where people could tell their goodbyes to this great person. The first construction was wooden. More than 100,000 people visited it for a month and a half.

Initially, the plan was to keep the body embalmed for a time until its official burial. 1929 advancements in the field allowed for the more prolonged preservation of the body. It was decide that the body should be kept at its current locations for future generations.

A new mausoleum was build- one made of marble, granite, labradorite and other materials. In the 70s a very elaborate sarcophagus was designed for the political leader.

Lenin left the capital once during the Second World War when there was the threat of Nazi invasion of Moscow. The body was moved to Tyumen in Siberia. It was returned soon after the crisis was over.
